WB DeLong is a student of human consciousness and
spiritual paths, with interest in mystical Christianity, Buddhism, the Tao, Sufism, Hinduism, Yoga, the Kabbalah, and
nature-based spirituality. He was a San Francisco neurosurgeon
for over thirty years, and now lives in North Central
Idaho with his wife and their four dogs.
From a conversation with the author:
I practiced and taught
neurosurgery in San Francisco for over 30 years, with a strong
emphasis on body-mind medicine. Besides my neurosurgical interests,
I have also been a student of various paths to personal
transformation. I have training in hypnosis and neuro-linguistic
programming (NLP), and in the early 1990s, I co-led a series of
seminars called Gifts of the Mind. I’ve participated in a
number of fire-walking rituals and have maintained a personal
meditative practice. About fifteen years ago I trained in sky-diving
to learn how to function calmly and purposefully in the face of
extreme stress.
In 1996 I wrote a book on environmentally friendly off-road recreation, called
4-Wheel Freedom: The Art of Off-Road Driving. It has gone through several revisions and printings
and is still selling well, mostly through Amazon.com.
My wife, Dr. Irene Lamberti, is a chiropractor who practiced in the San
Francisco area for many years. In 1994, we moved to North Central
Idaho and worked together in a combined chiropractic/neurosurgical
practice. I retired from active clinical practice in 2000.
Retirement has given me more time for the study and practice of
spiritual paths.
Irene has worked
extensively in the field of ethnic and sacred dance, and I helped
her produce a series of videos called Moving Meditations Through
Dance. These appeared on Public Television and were the subject
of workshops she gave at such venues as the Esalen Institute. I also
co-authored a book with her called Spirit in Action,
published in 2000 by Ballantine/Wellspring.
Both Irene and I have had considerable experience with the media. Irene was a television talk-show host
before she became a chiropractor, and after that was a radio talk-show host for the chiropractic community in San Francisco.
Both of us have been interviewed a number of times on television and radio on a number of topics, including medical and chiropractic issues,
off-road recreation, and metaphysical and spiritual topics.
The bibliography that
appears at the end of Voices of the Living Grail represents a
small fraction of the study and personal meditative practice Irene
and I have done over several decades. We are particularly interested
in nature-based spirituality and its relationship to other spiritual
paths, such as mystical Christianity, Buddhism, the Tao, Sufism, Hinduism,
Yoga, and the Kabbalah. We have intensively studied the writings of
Barbara Thiering, Ken Wilber, and Lawrence LeShan, all of whom we
feel are bringing fresh insights to our evolving world.
